“WEATHER GENERALS” OF THE KAMCHATKA REGION: FROM LEGEND TO REALITY OF THE 1930s–1940s

Abstract

The published article is dedicated to the 90th anniversary of the organization of the hydrometeorological service in the Kamchatka region. By the mid-1930s, after the formation of many management structures on a national scale, the state of the weather service was analyzed in relation to different regions of the country. A wealth of weather observation material has been accumulated on the peninsula. Its generalization and application became necessary. The work on the observation network was also analyzed.

The many sources identified make it possible to consider activities related to the formation of the Kamchatka Hydrometeorological Service Directorate, the observation network of stations, and the formation of teams of weather station employees.

The issues of solving the problem of personnel, providing assistance to the outskirts by the center, when the so-called “meteorologists of the Far Eastern seas”, trained at the Moscow Hydrometeorological Institute in the early 1930s and a group sent to work in the regions of the Far East, played a major role. Many issues in which famous meteorologists took part were considered, and their social portraits were created. The results of the development of the weather service during the difficult period of the Great Patriotic War on the territory of the USSR and during the Russian-Japanese War were carried out.
