The article examines the actions of the Southwestern Front in the Donbass in February 1943. The author notes that the general plan of the operation implied the main strike on the right flank by the forces of the 6th and 1st Guards armies, as well as the mobile front group in the Starobilsk area in the direction of Mariupol, to the rear of the army group "Don", in order to cut off its escape routes to the west. The troops of the left wing of the front – the 3rd Guards and 5th Tank armies - were advancing in the Voroshilovograd direction. The role of the 1st, 3rd and 6th Guards armies in conducting the Donbass operation and the liberation of the city is revealed. Voroshilovgrad.
The study indicates the importance of political work in the troops before the offensive. Every day, the Soviet Information Bureau reports were brought to the attention of commanders and soldiers, the significance of the success of the offensive of the 6th army and its contribution to the success of the offensive on Donbass in general were explained.
The author shows the activities of Soviet pilots, tankers, infantrymen during operations on the Donbass land.
It is indicated that the fierceness of the battles in the battle for Donbass was associated with the importance of the region both in military-political and economic significance.
