the article is devoted to the heroism and steadfastness of the fighters of the 17th Cossack Cavalry Corps, who for 8 days not only defended the positions indicated in the order, but also actively counterattacked the enemy superior in equipment. A striking event during the fighting highlighted the enemy's attack with Cossack lava in the cavalry formation. The Cossacks did not allow the enemy to use the area of Maykop as an oil producer. The Red Army troops managed to take up defense in the foothills of the Caucasus. The topic is relevant today, as volunteer Cossacks also take part in a special military operation in the territories of the DPR and LPR. Therefore, the author dwelt in detail on the specifics of the organization, the work on recruiting volunteer Cossack formations of the 17th cavalry corps and the combat operations of its personnel. The paper presents facts that are little known to a wide range of scientists
