Abstract

The life, official and social activities of one of the first historians of the Kuban and Terek Cossacks, ethnographer, a major public figure and lieutenant general of the Kuban Cossack army, Ivan Diomidovich Popko, are invariable among the scientific community of the North Caucasus. The purpose of the article is an attempt to consider the activities of the famous military-historian and local historian as the leader of the nobility of the Stavropol province, the Kuban and Terek regions. The basis of the article was personal letters and official correspondence of the general. The entire complex of identified documents is stored in the State Archive of the Stavropol Territory. The letters themselves are a valuable source that allows you to significantly supplement the biography of Ivan Diomidovich, and, in particular, the background of his election by the leader of the nobility of the Stavropol province, the Kuban and Terek regions. And also his long and very fruitful activity in this field.
